Triglycerides and Kidney Disease
Triglycerides are important nutrients that our body produces naturally to act as the body’s reserve energy tanks and also to complete the bodily chemical reactions that give rise to the lipoprotein known as cholesterol. However, both of these attributes, which makes triglyceride an important nutrient, can also work against our body if the total count in the blood plasma crosses the safety marks. Very high triglyceride levels in one’s blood makes a person especially susceptible to all kinds of heart diseases, but it does not leave out some of the other major organs either. Fatty liver, kidney failure and pancreatitis are some of the common diseases which could be brought on by unchecked high triglyceride levels. However, the reason behind the increasing triglycerides is also largely relevant as to how it will affect the body.
When one’s high blood triglyceride levels start affecting the kidneys, primarily, he/she will experience reduced kidney functions and that is what usually leads to kidney disease over time. As soon as the kidneys start losing their ability to function properly, the blood creatinine levels begin to rise and it has been established that the creatinine, which is created when muscle breakdown occurs, is directly related to the increase of triglyceride levels in one’s blood. Once one develops kidney disease, what happens is that the organs are no longer able to maintain the balance between fluids, waste and electrolytes in the blood. As regulating these bodily products are the kidney’s primary function, swelling of various parts of the body (edema) due to abnormal fluid accumulation is fairly common for people who suffer from kidney disease. However, there might not be any significant symptoms for the one suffering from kidney disease to realize it at the early stages. In fact, people often see the symptoms so late that it turns out to be a bit too late for taking any progressive action that can turn one’s health around. It is for this reason, that overweight or obese people, who also suffer from diabetes and high blood pressure, should always keep themselves under medical supervision.
If left uncontrolled, kidney disease can also be fatal due to the possibility of a complete kidney failure at the later stages of the disease. It is for this reason that limiting the consumption of sodium, phosphorus, potassium, protein etc is absolutely essential for people suffering from kidney disease. Since kidneys and triglycerides are linked with each other via this unhealthy connection, one needs to find out and treat the root cause or causes of excess triglycerides in one’s blood. If a disorder like familial hypertriglyceridemia or a disease like diabetes is not found to be responsible for the high triglycerides, it becomes easier to reduce triglycerides as the reason behind the lipid abnormality may then just be unhealthy lifestyle and imbalanced dietary habits. Following a high triglycerides diet that is rich in foods to lower triglycerides such as fruits, whole grains, dark green leafy vegetables and omega fats, while lacking in saturated animal fats and carbohydrates should help one to lower triglycerides and stop a kidney failure from ever happening. If the triglyceride levels are too high, (above 500 mg/dL) then medicinal help might also be required to bring the levels down fast.
