Low Triglycerides

Generally, low triglycerides are considered to be a sign of health as high triglyceride levels are associated with heart diseases and various other health issues. Anyone with a blood triglyceride count of less than 150 mg/dL would be considered to be a fit person with very little chances of developing heart problems. In fact, athletes, bodybuilders and sports persons are known to maintain triglyceride counts as low as less than 100 mg/dL. While it is not expected or advised that everyone should try to bring their blood triglyceride levels to as low as that of the world class athletes, but the fact remains that below100 mg/dL is the optimum triglyceride level for human beings. Although low triglycerides are mostly considered synonymous to fitness and health, it might not be so, if the count becomes too low however. People with less than 50 mg/dL of triglycerides in their blood may or may not be suffering from some sort of a disorder, but those who register a blood triglyceride count of 35 mg/dL or even less, should definitely go through a medical checkup routine in order to determine the problem.

Low triglycerides can be brought on by malabsorption and malnutrition, but the reasons as to why any one of this two might actually occur are many. Malnutrition is often the reason for low triglycerides and it is either brought on by malabsorption of the consumed nutrients or simply by an imbalanced diet. Although it is advised that one should restrict himself/herself from overindulging in fatty food items, sugary items and alcohol, it does not mean that one should completely stop taking in any food that might contribute to triglyceride production in the body; unless of course, the condition of the patient demands it. Triglycerides and cholesterol are mainly known as bad for health, but they do serve an important function. Triglyceride is a necessary component in the formation of cholesterol which in turn, is also extremely essential for the construction of cell membranes and tissues. Triglycerides also act as the reserve energy tank of the body that supplies it with calories on demand. Therefore it is essential for humans to consume foods that raise triglycerides.

If diet is not the problem, then it could be hyperthyroidism, which is the medical term for an overactive thyroid gland. Hyperthyroidism speeds up the overall metabolism of an individual, which does not allow the consumed nutrients to stay within the digestive system long enough to be absorbed properly by the body. This burns out the supply of existing blood triglycerides quickly while also not allowing sufficient time for proper refilling. Fat absorption disorders may also result from diseases such as AIDS, the HIV virus, certain types of cancer, Crohn’s disease, Celiac disease and liver disease. Sometimes, medications can also be the reason for low triglycerides. Doctors at times, advise patients with elevated triglycerides to take medicines to reduce triglyceride levels and such medicines can take down the level too low from time to time. In order to determine the specific cause of low triglycerides, it is necessary for a medical practitioner to properly know the medical history and the physiological conditions of the patient in question.
